Today we began what will be an extensive examination of the use of quotations when writing about literature. The concept of the quote sandwich was introduced and it was quite tasty if I do say so myself! Special thank to the NYC Writing Project and UCLA Writing Progarm for this particularly effective strategy.
Here is the handout.
We began today's class with a review of the Quote Sandwich. We then examined the requiem of the play more closely and analyzed the words of Charley asking what else a man needs beside "a little salary." We also discussed Miller's comment on the American Dream and made inferences about Happy and Biff's prospects in the future.
Wednesday, 12.3.08
We spent the majority of today's class period in the author's chair.
Thursday, 12.4.08
The class was responsible for submitting 3 paragraphs by the end of the period.
Paragraph 1 focused on your potential paper topic.
Paragraphs 2-3 were quote sandwiches that placed two of your key quotes in context and provided an explanation of the quotes significance.
Friday, 12.5.08
Today we strolled down memory lane, reading a quote sandwich from a Death of a Salesman Paper from the past. We looked for conventional errors and found four and then identified the context, quote and explanation. We also pointed out the author's ability to transition between paragraphs. After reading the paragraph, we each tried to identify the paper's thesis based on this particular branch of support.
